Everyone knows the famous words: “‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house . . .” Clement C. Moore’s famous poem entitled "A Visit from St. Nicholas" was written in 1822 and has been a holiday classic ever since. This gorgeous illustration featured above was published in 1912 by artist Jessie Willcox Smith and is considered by many to be the definitive version of the story. It's easy to see why: her wonderful art work captures the holiday spirit of Moore's poem in stunning detail.

A free digital version of this image is available in a transparent PNG file. If you're on a Mac, just CTRL-click the image above. If you're on a PC, simply right click on it.  After the page loads, drag the image to your desktop.

At 72 dpi, this file is best used for web design application including blog buttons, blog banners, and Etsy shop banners.

If you would like to use this file for printing, the recommended standard file size is 300 dpi as 72 dpi is too small a resolution for a quality print.  I have ACEO sized digital collage sheets in 300 dpi available at my Etsy shop.

Free Digital Collage Sheet - "A Visit From St. Nicholas" by Clement C. Moore

Available now for free download are two 8.5 x 11" digital collage sheets of featuring 12 individual  ACEO/ATC sized illustrations of the classic holiday poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas".  The file downloads in a much high resolution than the placeholder image here.

This edition of the poem originally came as a fold out style pamphlet that was published in 1864 by L. Prang of Boston.  The copy I was working with was very delicate and pretty thrashed but I did my best to clean it up in PhotoShop, however you will notice some tears and aging when you look really close at the high resolution file (not the placeholder images featured here). What I love is that Santa is dressed in a little yellow suit. It's really quite cute! Just click on the images to get the freebie. Enjoy!

Free Digital Collage Sheet - Children's Storybook Illustrations by Virginia Frances Sterrett

This series of black and white storybook illustrations by Virginia Frances Sterrett. Her first commission came in 1919 from Penn Publishing Company to illustrate the Comptesse de Ségur's Old French Fairy Tales. She was only 19 years of age and received $500 for the eight watercolors and 16 pen and ink drawings, with a supplemental $250 for a colored drawing for the cover and ink drawings for the end papers and boards.  I also have some of the color illustrations as high resolution digital printable files in 8.5" x 11" and ATC ACEO sizes in my Etsy shop. 

A Day of Thanksgiving + Free Thanksgiving Clipart

Released in 1951 by Centron Corporation " A Day of Thanksgiving" is about a working class family  experiencing financial hardships and so the parents have to break the news to the kids that there will be no turkey for Thanksgiving this year.

The film was written during the dark period in American history: the era of the House of Un-American Activities Committee and McCarthy-ism.  While the film gets a bit preachy for my tastes and the acting a little stilted,  the message is still worthwhile: an attitude of gratitude for family and friends.  Of course it's said with more words than that, yet this simple film makes for historical interest in comparison to the economic hardships of the the nation today.  Just like the family in this film, I won't be having any turkey this Thanksgiving but only because I'm preferring to try a vegetarian meal this year. 

My gratitude for all that I am and all that I have is like this little poem I've scanned from "Book Trails" copyrighted in 1928: "I am grateful for health, for food, for love and friends."

In response of the burgeoning Occupy movement that started on Wall Street a few weeks ago (but has since gone global) I thought it might be worthwhile to post this collage sheet I researched and put together. Perhaps you can use it in your mixed media and collage work?  All images are in the public domain.

Then I discovered that Amazon also offers free music downloads. In fact, their seasonal promotion is called "25 Days of Free" and features one free holiday song to download daily until Christmas.  You can get fantastic melodies of all your Christmas and New Year's favorites from a variety of super awesome recording artists including Chris Isaak and the Indigo Girls. Each day is like a melodic advent calendar that's such a delight you really shouldn't miss out.

PIF It To Me Baby! (Pay It Forward on Etsy)

Here's a little video I made featuring some of the PIF listings I've put up on Etsy this week.

PIF stands for "Pay It Forward" and it's been a phe-bomb-enon on Etsy since I joined. The idea about a PIF listing is simple: you must do something nice for someone else. You can either list an item of your own as a PIF, or do a generous act of kindness for a friend or even a complete stranger!

Etsy PIF listings are essentially free -- the price is set at the Etsy-mandated minimum of 20 cents to post an item on the site. Some PIFs charge very inexpensive shipping, and some sellers even ship their PIF items for free.

I think PIFs are a fun way to connect with other Etsyans so I really hope that whomever purchases my PIFs enjoys them more than me having them sitting there in my craft pile all neglected and sad! :)

In most of the PIFs I offer, by the time I stick the item in a fresh new envelope, put some stamps on it, pay my Etsy fees and PayPal fees, tootle on down (by foot -- mind you) to my local post office this listing comes out even for me. It is not my intention to gouge or overprice PIFs to make a profit although I've seen many listings do this and IMHO it kinda sucks because I feel it takes away from the spirit of PIFting.

When offering a PIF it's my heart's intention to pass the item forward to you for the true cost of the item alone, not the item plus the taxes, fees, handling materials and shipping costs involved. I mean, I want to pass along a free cuppa coffee but I'm not into handing out an entirely free lunch! ;) That said and all humor aside, I truly hope you'll find my take on this as fair. A lot of my friend's are suffering from the effects of bad economy right now so I'm just trying to make the day go by a little more joyously through PIFting.

Also, while I totally ♥ repeat customers here's the deal with my PIFs: please only one PIF per person within 14 days of ordering your last PIF from me. I just want to be fair to everybody so I hope you understand and come back to see what else I'm offering.

The US Games Company currently claims a valid copyright on certain colorized versions of the deck published in the early seventies so be sure to check the date on a set if you plan to use real cards in your art for commercial use.

Jane Seymour plays Solitaire, a beautiful virgin tarot expert who has the ability to see both the future and remote events in the present. Using a stacked tarot deck of only cards showing "The Lovers", Bond tricks her into thinking that seduction is in her future and then seduces her. Solitaire loses her ability to foretell the future when she loses her virginity to him. Here's the thing: if she's that good a psychic, you think she would have known the cards were stacked! Just sayin'.

LuLu's New Dress!

Many of my new readers have been enjoying my series of the modified 3 column Minima template I coded and am giving away under a CC 3.0.

It's basically just your normal 2 column minima with an extra side column.  There's one that's just perfect for free backgrounds by such fabulous designers as 1stFloorFlat, Itkupilli's Cute'n'Cool, the Background Fairy and more.  I call that model the "Skinny" because it's a slender one that fits the design specifications of most free backgrounds.

But I also developed templates with extra elbow room and I call them "Standard" and "Wide".  Think of them as ectomorphic, endomorphic and mesomorphic templates respectively.

Now I'm developing a 3 column Minima with an additional three footer columns much like the ones coded in my template here (scroll down to the bottom of my blog to see!) ⬇

The first to test this new template is my wonderful friend LuLu of Coastal Sisters. You should really have a look at how pretty it is with her new free background she's sporting from the Cutest Blog on The Block.  LuLu's giving this template a beta test for me and will be providing me feedback to let me know how it's working for her.

It's funny because when LuLu posted her debut the new template she likened it to a new dress. I think that's so apropos because I feel like templates are a dress form and the free backgrounds that the above referenced designers create are the gowns.  It's when I began to see a lot of ill coded templates -- or rather an "ill fitted" dress forms -- that I got my tailoring skillz (i.e. coding skills) out to help make sure your dress fits your blog perfectly.  To me it's a lot like dressing up paper dolls!

FREEBIE! New 3 Column Minima Dark Template for Blogger/Blogspot

Last week I offered up as a PIF item (Pay-It-Forward) on Etsy a free modified Minima template with three columns. As most people know, the original Minima template has only two columns. Now it's available in dark as you can see above. See the live demo here.

Here's the specifications of this template's built-in features:

• The template is 940px wide with the main column coded at 500px and the side columns at 185px.
• An additional area for adding gadgets just below the banner. The translation menu I used in this demo is a perfect example. Use this for static (sticky) notes, photos, extra menu bars, widgets, polls, etc.
